Destiny is based on a verse from the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam

'Tis all a Chequer board of
Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays
Hither and thither moves, and mates,

and slays
And one by one back in the Closet lays'

Here the clown Harlequin smiles inanely as he contemplates the fate of a king.  Kings, queens, bishops, knights, pawns - they are equally foolish in their delusion that there is some meaning to life and a benevolent deity is looking to their welfare.

Destiny is holding the black king deciding whether or not to throw him into the box.  In chess, a king is never actually taken off the board - but Destiny plays to his own rules.
