This is Venus portrayed after her liaison with Mars, the god of war. She is carved from limewood with some copper and silver mounted on a 12 inch / 30 cm diameter marble sphere.
This is not a difficult carving but having carved several very similar figures I have worked out a method of doing it. It requires a very systematic approach, completing certain stages in order before attempting the next stages.
Because of the very large size of the timber needed for my Venus I have demonstrated the bandsawing of a figure to fit a 7 inch / 17.5 cm which are fairly commonly available.
The figure laid over a ball is very striking and much in demand by my clients. I hope you will enjoy the challenge – I think you will find it worth it.
