Icarus was the son of Daedalus who built the labyrinth at the palace of King Midas of Crete.  To escape from the island Daedalus made wings for himself and his son, which were attached with wax.
Icarus, despite being warned, flew too close to the sun, melting the wax and so losing his wings and falling into the sea
